Global Citizenship magazine for schools

Aboyne Goes Global

At Aboyne Academy, Aberdeenshire, a group of S3 Pupils have been learning about about the UN’s Global Goals for Sustainable Development. This is what they did.

Aboyne Goes Global

Global Goals

The global goals are a seventeen point plan for the world to end poverty, combat climate change and fight injustice and inequality. They were launched in 2015, and schools all over the world were given a challenge; to help make these goals famous as part of the World’s Largest Lesson.

Infographic challenge

Pupils have been busy creating some eye-catching infographics which aim to inform people what these goals are all about. Before creating their infographics, pupils had to research their chosen goal, and identify the key points they wanted to share. Through their research activities they were able to find out more about the global issues highlighted by the goals, like poverty, climate change and inequality. Once they had identified their key points, they were tasked with choosing the most effective way of displaying this information, whether that be through graphs, images or statistics. The challenge was to make this information easy to understand and accessible through creating some eye-catching, informative infographics.

Learning

The purpose of this project was to increase pupils’ understanding of global issues and to help them think about the issues that are important to them, whilst at the same time covering many of the outcomes of the Graphic Communication course. Using the Global Goals provided a rich, context for covering many of the experiences and outcomes within this curriculum area and has potential for all curricular areas.
