Down the Line

This activity provides an opportunity for pupils to share, discuss and reflect on their views about the Commonwealth.

Down the Line

Aims:

  • To share and discuss opinions about issues related to the Commonwealth
  • To respect and understand other people’s viewpoints about the Commonwealth

What you need:

  • A large space (indoor or outdoor), signs with ‘strongly agree’ and ‘strongly disagree’

What to do:

  • Create an imaginary line across a large, clear space and clearly label each end with ‘strongly agree’ and ‘strongly disagree’.
  • Read out each statement from the list below and ask pupils to move to a point on the line that best represents their opinions on the statement.  Once they have stopped moving, ask a one or two pupils to explain why they have chosen their position.

Reflection and evaluation:

  • Discuss with the class that opinions can be flexible. If they form an opinion today, with more information, further discussion and changing circumstances it is fine to change their opinion. It is an important part of developing critical thinking skills as a global citizen.

Statements

  • There are more differences between people around the Commonwealth than similarities.
  • It is good that my country is part of the Commonwealth.
  • It is a good thing that there is so much diversity across the Commonwealth.
  • It is important that the Commonwealth stands up for equal rights for girls and women.
  • I think the Commonwealth should work to protect the environment for future generations.
  • I feel the Commonwealth is not relevant to my life
