Linking thinking

Fraserburgh Academy is taking the lead in North East Scotland by linking Global Learning with Fair Trade and the Sustainable Development Goals.

Linking thinking

Fraserburgh Academy held a two day event Fair Trade, Water Aid, which Depute Head, Pauline Buchan, described as an: “Interdisciplinary project designed to raise awareness of the Sustainable Global Goals by involving pupils in themed workshops such as cooking with Fairtrade ingredients and hosting a Fairtrade Café, participating in a ‘clean water rescue’ scenario, a ‘build a bridge’ engineering challenge and creating infographics.”

The event was the culmination of pupils learning around Global Goal 6, as well as Fairtrade and the impact of its social premium on empowerment and creating sustainable communities.

Pupils considered how our consumer patterns here in Scotland can impact on people’s access to clean water in other countries.

Infographics

A key outcome was for pupils to apply their knowledge and skills learnt from across different curriculum areas to problem solving in a variety of tasks. In an interactive water rescue scenario, pupils had to work together as a team to transport clean water from point A to B. This activity and others can be found in Water Aid’s The Water Resource.

Within the curriculum areas of technology and science pupils had to simulate a situation where floods had curtailed access to materials and transportation and build a bridge that could carry the weight of a car. Combining Expressive Arts with Social Studies, pupils worked to create infographics linking Fairtrade with Global Goal 6: Clean Water and Sanitation. The activity was designed to encourage pupils to consider how our consumer patterns here in Scotland can impact on people’s access to clean water in other countries and to understand the effects of a lack of sanitation.

Local support

Montgomery Development Education Centre took part and celebrated Fraserburgh Academy’s success, acting as judge in pupils’ infographics and summarising the two days with a whole school assembly.

Depute Head Pauline Buchan sees the event as a springboard for the future. It is an initiative which will be repeated at Fraserburgh Academy as it provides an invaluable opportunity for pupils to develop wider understanding of putting theory into practice but also for them to live as global citizens.

A camera team followed all activities and created this movie, giving attending pupils credit for their dedicated work.
