Aberdeen School goes Fairtrade!

St Joseph’s school is the first school in Aberdeen to adopt a Fairtrade school uniform. Last week, the Fairtrade group welcomed special guest, Andy Ashcroft from Koolskools, to do an assembly to the whole school about Fairtrade cotton, and the difference buying Fairtrade uniform makes to cotton producers and manufacturers.

Aberdeen School goes Fairtrade!

Andy had met some of the pupils and teachers from St Josephs during Fairtrade Fortnight last February, when he was touring Scotland with Pamela l’intelligent, who works for Craft Aid in Mauritius, in the factory where the uniforms are made.

Andy, Pamela, and pupils and teachers from several schools met at the Montgomery Development Education Centre, where we heard Pamela’s inspirational story and enjoyed Fairtrade food and drinks.

Following the event, the Fairtrade group, teachers and parent helpers asked Andy to design a Fairtrade polo shirt and sweatshirt in the St Joseph’s colours. The school is very committed to Fairtrade, and had been trying to source a suitable Fairtrade uniform since 2012. As you can see, the uniform looks fantastic and the pupils and staff are delighted.

FT banana, the mascot for Aberdeen’s Fairtrade Steering Group is going with Andy to Mauritius to see how the uniforms are made. Watch out for his status updates on Facebook!
