21ST MARCH

International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination

The International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination highlights global and local efforts to challenge racism, promote equity and uphold human rights. Through a Global Citizenship Education approach, the day offers opportunities for learners to explore identity, justice, discrimination and the impact racism has on individuals and communities.

In Scotland, this aligns closely with national priorities for anti‑racist education. As part of the Anti‑Racist Education Programme (AREP), Scotland’s Development Education Centres were commissioned to create antiracist.scot – an educator‑focused website offering clear guidance, professional learning and classroom‑ready approaches to embedding anti‑racist practice. The site supports educators to understand the Scottish context of racism, strengthen confidence in addressing difficult conversations and design learning that promotes equity, rights and inclusion.

This day provides a meaningful context for using these tools to support reflective, respectful learning across Health and Wellbeing, Social Studies and literacy, helping to build inclusive school communities rooted in fairness and human dignity.
