During 2nd – 6th February, The Scottish Book Trust will be marking the first ever Reading Schools Week.
Reading Schools Week is a brilliant opportunity to explore stories that open up conversations about identity, justice and our shared world – all key global citizenship values (here in Scotland, global citizenship is embedded within the Curriculum for Excellence, as part of the Learning for Sustainability framework!).
Through the resources and activities that we’ve spotlighted, children and young people can encounter diverse voices, challenge stereotypes and build empathy and understanding of other points of view. Take a look below and explore how reading can inspire action for a fairer world:
- Enjoy Early Level fiction and non-fiction picture books through an anti-racist lens. Explore topics including our identities, making friends, welcoming others and inspirational people past and present to engage young learners and open up discussions that build empathy.
- Explore First and Second Level Picture Books through a rights-based approach. Discuss the way rights are embedded in different stories and try activities that teach about, through and for children’s rights in this resource created by Scotdec and The Scottish Book Trust.
- Take an Anti-racist Literacy approach to First – Fourth Level texts across 5 different genres. Use the classroom-ready materials and resources or have a go at applying Scotland’s new anti-racist literacy framework to any text you are exploring with young people!
- Find the perfect read in the comprehensive Signposts Global Citizenship Fiction Reading List for Early – Fourth Levels. Browse by topic and stage to find the perfect picture book, graphic novel or story!
- Read this free online graphic novel adaptations of 3 short stories by Robert Louis Stevenson. Use the teaching resources aimed at Second – Fourth Levels, to explore how these texts have been remediated through a decolonial lens.
